OpenAI Turned ChatGPT Ads Into Sponsored Conversations. Wayfair Is Already In.
OpenAI announced Sponsored Agents on September 16, a new ChatGPT ad format where a relevant ad can open into a labeled, in-chat conversation with the sponsoring business's own AI agent. Wayfair is a launch partner. Shopify is OpenAI's first ecommerce integration and HubSpot its first CRM integration, both live starting the same day. This isn't a banner ad with a link. It's a chat window where the sponsor's agent answers follow-up questions and can hand the user off to checkout, all inside ChatGPT.
What a Sponsored Agent actually is
When a relevant ad shows up in a ChatGPT conversation, the user can choose to open a clearly labeled conversation with that business's agent. Inside that conversation, the user can ask questions, get specific answers about the product, and click through to the business's site when they're ready. It's opt-in, not an interruption, and it's explicitly labeled as sponsored rather than blended into the regular assistant response. That distinction matters: OpenAI is trying to keep the core ChatGPT answer trustworthy while building a separate, clearly marked commercial lane next to it.
The business context explains the pace
OpenAI's advertising division hit a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days, and the company is targeting $2.5 billion in ad revenue for the year. That's the actual reason this shipped as fast and as fully integrated as it did. A new ad format launching with a household retail name, a payments-adjacent CRM partner, and a direct ecommerce platform integration on day one isn't a slow beta rollout, it's a company moving quickly on a revenue line that's already working.
Why the Shopify integration is the part solo builders should look at
Shopify is OpenAI's first ecommerce partner for this, which means a store owner's existing product catalog can become the sponsor agent's knowledge base without a custom integration. If you already run a Shopify store, connecting to ChatGPT Ads is closer to flipping a setting than building anything. That's a meaningfully lower bar than most new ad platforms have historically required, and it's worth testing specifically because the format is new: early inventory on a channel like this tends to be cheaper and less competitive than it will be once every DTC brand has figured out how to write for it.
What actually matters if you try this
A Sponsored Agent conversation lives or dies on how well it answers real follow-up questions, not on ad creative. A well-structured product feed with accurate shipping timelines, clear return policies, and specific answers to comparison questions ("does this work with X") will outperform a generic pitch, because the whole point of the format is that the user is asking something specific instead of skimming a banner. If your product data in Shopify is thin or outdated, this format will expose that faster than a static ad would.
The honest take
I'd treat this the way I'd treat any new ad channel that launched this week: worth testing now while it's cheap and OpenAI is actively courting adoption, not worth restructuring an entire acquisition budget around. Perplexity just moved Comet's Control Browser feature behind a paywall after using it to sell subscriptions, which is the same lesson every AI vendor teaches eventually: a feature that's generous and cheap while the vendor is building adoption can get repriced or restructured once it's proven out. Get the Shopify connection wired up this month if you're already on Shopify. Don't build a Q4 forecast that assumes this channel's economics stay where they are today.
Where I could be wrong: if Sponsored Agents convert meaningfully better than static ads because the format genuinely answers buyer questions better, this could become a durable, differentiated channel rather than a promotional-pricing phase. I don't have conversion data yet, nobody outside the launch partners does. That's exactly why testing small now beats committing budget on the announcement alone.
