Privacy Policy
Last updated: 30 September 2026
SpendWise is a personal spending tracker for iPhone and iPad. It does not use a SpendWise-run server, does not require an account, and does not include any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDK. This policy exists to describe what actually happens with your data when you use the app.
Data we collect: none we can see
SpendWise does not transmit your data. Every transaction, budget, receipt scan, column mapping, and preference is written to your device's local SwiftData store. It never leaves your phone unless you choose to share it (see "Data you can export" below).
Because we do not receive or store your data, we cannot look at it, lose it, sell it, or hand it over. There is no SpendWise account and no SpendWise database.
Data the app writes on your device
- Transactions you enter, scan, or import (amount, merchant, date, category, note, currency, recurring flag).
- Category budgets you create.
- Column mappings from bank imports, so future imports auto-map.
- Your default currency and other preferences (via
UserDefaults). - A small on-device usage log (for example: app opened, transaction added, Pro screen shown), with the app version, iOS version, device model and a random identifier created on install. It contains no transaction details, stays on your device and is currently never uploaded. Turn it off in Settings → Local Usage Log.
Camera and receipt scanning
When you scan a receipt, SpendWise uses Apple's on-device Vision framework to extract text. The photo is not uploaded, is not saved to your Photos library, and is discarded once the parsed merchant, amount, and date have been added to your transaction. iOS asks for camera permission the first time you use this feature; you can revoke it in Settings → SpendWise at any time.
Bank imports
SpendWise does not connect to your bank. There is no Plaid, Yodlee, or aggregator integration, and the app never asks for banking credentials. Bank imports work only on files you export yourself from your bank's website (CSV, TSV, JSON, OFX/QFX). The imported transactions and the mapping SpendWise learns are stored on your device.
Apple's involvement
Some interactions with SpendWise route through Apple, not through us:
- App Store subscription purchases. Handled by StoreKit. Apple sees the transaction; we receive only a signed receipt telling us whether Pro is active. We do not see your Apple ID or payment method.
- iCloud Backup. If you have iCloud Backup enabled on your device, iOS may include SpendWise's local database in your Apple-encrypted backup. This is Apple's mechanism; SpendWise does not perform its own cloud backup.
- Crash reports. If you have "Share iPhone Analytics" enabled in Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements, Apple may share aggregated crash reports with developers. SpendWise does not embed a crash reporter of its own.
Data you can export
Settings → Export Data (CSV) creates a standards-compliant CSV containing your transactions. You choose where it goes via the iOS share sheet. Once shared, that file is out of SpendWise's control.
Data you can delete
Delete transactions and budgets one by one, or use Settings → Reset All Data to remove them all (the app then loads a few demo entries you can dismiss from the dashboard banner). Reset doesn't clear your settings or the local usage log. Deleting the app removes everything SpendWise stored on the device.
Widgets
SpendWise widgets show this month's totals, budget progress and your most recent merchants and amounts. If you add them to your Lock Screen, anyone holding your phone can see those figures.
Children
SpendWise is not directed at children under 13. It doesn't collect personal data from anyone.
Your rights
If you're in the EU or UK you have the right to access, correct and delete personal data held about you. SpendWise doesn't send any to us, but you're welcome to email about it.
Changes to this policy
If we change what the app does with data, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date above. Because we don't have an account system, we cannot email you about changes; please re-read this policy after major SpendWise updates.
